How much should I insure my home for?

Contents - You need to consider all of the possessions within your home and how much it would cost to replace them new today, except for clothing and linen where you can deduct an amount for wear and tear.

Buildings - For most homes we are able to use our rebuilding cost calculator to estimate the rebuilding cost – if we are able to do this we’ll cover you for the full cost of rebuilding (up to £500,000). If we are unable to use our calculator (eg if your home isn't built of traditional materials) the sum insured you choose must be enough to cover the cost of rebuilding your home. You should also add on an extra amount to cover demolition costs, architects and surveyor’s fees.

What is the difference between my buildings and contents?

What is defined as valuable?

When we refer to "valuables" we mean:

  • Coin, stamp, medal collections
  • Pictures and other works of art
  • Items of gold, silver and other precious metals
  • Jewellery and furs
  • Antiques (not including furniture), collectables and watches

Valuables are included in our standard cover up to the value of £6000 The single article limit for valuables is £1500; any single item over this value needs to be specified.

Do I need to specify all of my valuables items such as furniture and stereo equipment?

No. You only need to specify items that are worth more than £1,500 and fall under our definition of a ‘Valuable’. We define Valuables as jewellery, watches, furs, items or sets or collections of gold, silver or other precious metals, works of art, sets of stamps or coins or medals all belonging to you or any member of your family.

Why do I need emergency cover?

While your home insurance policy covers the residual damage caused by, say, a leaking radiator, it would not cover the cost of a plumber to come out and fix the leak itself. Or the cost of any parts he uses in the process.

Home emergency cover provides 24 hour a day access to a network of reliable tradesmen. Call-out, labour, parts and VAT are covered up to £500 per incident.

Furthermore if you made a claim under your buildings or contents section for a claim of this nature eg water damage to your carpet:-

  • you would have to pay the excess relevant to that section.
  • it could mean you lose your No Claims Discount entitlement under that section.

There is no excess to pay in the event of a claim under the home emergency cover section and it will not impact any No Claims Discount you have earned elsewhere on your policy.

Do you give a no-claims discount on home insurance?

So many claims that are made on home insurance policies (e.g. storm damage, burst pipes, subsidence etc.), are not the fault of the policyholder that we do not issue a No Claims Discount for these policies.

It would clearly be unfair to prejudice against a policyholder for making a claim for against an incident over which they had no control, so by not issuing and NCD at all, all customers are treated fairly.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes, payment by direct debit is available, provided the proposer is aged 18 or over, and subject to a minimum premium. A credit charge is payable and this will be added to your total premium. Full details of the direct debit deposit, instalment amounts and APR will be provided with your quote summary.
